After four years of play in the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, the tournament is played in another venue in 2002. Bridlington will be the new host town.
Mark Dudbridge knocks out the Dutch defending champion Raymond van Barneveld in the first round. This was the start of his amazing run, because one day later he held the cup. A very surprising edition of the World Masters, because in the quarterfinals only two seeded players compete. These players are Steve Coote, seeded number nine, and Andy Fordham, seeded number six.
Fordham loses to Steve Beaton in the quarterfinals and Coote is being sent home in the semi final by another surprise, Tony West. Dudbridge wins the final 7-4 to West. Because Dudbridge did not reach the BDO World Championships, he switched to the PDC to compete there. After this edition, the World Master will receive a ticket for the BDO World Cup to follow.
