The 24th edition of the Winmau World Masters is played at the 5th and 6th of December in the Paragon Hotel in London. After Erik Clarys in 1995, another surprise manages to win the World Masters title. Graham Hunt from Australia plays the darts of his life and wins the cup, being the first non-European winner. In the final Hunt defeats Ronnie Baxter, but on his way he ended the hopes of Erik Clarys, Mervyn King and Peter Hinkley as well.

Ronnie Baxter beats Ted Hankey in the semi-final, who showed his self at an important tournament for the first time. Les Delderfield is the other major upset in the semi-final, losing to Hunt.
