In 1977 the young Englishman Eric Bristow won the Winmau World Masters. In the final, the "Crafty Cockney" defeated his compatriot Paul Reynolds. On his way to victory Bristow defeated amongst others Robert Coope, Charlie Ellix and Tony Ridler.
The Belgian Louis Iseghem made the last 16 in which he lost to Charlie Ellix 3-2. The Dutchman Evert van Zanten lost in the first round to the Canadian Frank Varley.
The tournament was played at the Wembley conference centre in London.
