The 2023 Lakeside WDF World Championship will be held from January 7 till 15 at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green. Twenty-four players from all over the world qualify to have a go at the title. England's Beau Greaves manages to secure her title once more, beating the Dutch Aileen de Graaf in de final with some astonishing numbers.
For the first time in the World Championship history, the tournament will be held in December. This also means it’s been well over a year and a half since the last tournament was played. Beau Greaves is the overwhelming favourite for the title since she has won most other tournaments since her last World Championship title. She doesn’t encounter any obstacles at the Lakeside Country Club this year either. Up until the final she doesn’t lose a single set against Lorraine Hyde, Paula Murphy or Rhian O’Sullivan. In those three matches she only loses two legs.
Her opponent in the final is the number 2 on the ranking, Aileen de Graaf. The Dutchman wins the deciding leg against Nicole Regnaud from New Zealand in her first match. After that she wins her matches against Lorraine Winstanley and Lisa Ashton.
In the final, Greaves gets 2-0 ahead in sets by winning 6 out of 7 legs. The third set stretches to the fifth and deciding leg, but it is Greaves that strikes. De Graaf plays a very neat fourth set that she ends up winning, but that’s about it. The fifth set goes to Greaves with 3-0 who wins the World Championship for a second time in a row.
