The Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship of 2019 was held from 5 to 12 January at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green. Sixteen ladies took a shot at the title. It was the Japanese debutant Mikuru Suzuki who became world champion for the first time.
Suzuki immediately caused a sensation in the first round by winning 2-0 against titleholder Lisa Ashton. Also, as a seeded player, Deta Hedman can not get past the first round. The Dutch ladies Sharon Prins and Aileen de Graaf continue to the quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory.
In the quarter-finals, it’s game over for both Dutch ladies: Prins loses 2-0 against Suzuki, while De Graaf goes down against Anastasia Dobromyslova with the same score. Recordholder Trina Gulliver loses 2-0 to Lorraine Winstanley, who manages to reach the final for the first time after a 2-1 victory over Dobromyslova. Suzuki loses against Maria O'Brien no set and prepares for the final against Winstanley.
The Japanese is supreme in this and manages to win the final 3-0. This makes her the first Asian player to win the Lakeside and the first lady with an average of over ninety in the final (90.12).
