Richard Ashdown although small in stature, is very much respected throughout the darting community. Besides his work as a referee at various international opens he works as a spotter on tournaments for both the BDO and PDC. A spotter is the one that points the cameramen into the right locations during a match. A very tough job, especially in modern day darts where every player has got his own ways of finishing or setting a finish up.
Richard began as a referee in 2002, like so many others, with Bobby George. Since that day Richard continues to work with Mr. Glitter, but with a lot of other top players too. Richard made his TV debut during the 2005 Masters of Darts, but really starts making a name for himself when he referees several matches in the main tournament of the 2007 IDL and WDT.
Richard often works with Dutchman Jacques Nieuwlaat, for instance at the 2008 and 2009 League of Legends and since 2008 they are active at all the WDF World- and Europe Cups. Since 2013 Little Richard is the successor to Martin Fitzmaurice as the face of the BDO at their events. He fulfilled this role until the 2019 World Championship. After that World Championship, all the referees resigned together after a disagreement with the BDO.
In 2020 he starts working at WDF as Chief Development Officer to map the future of darts within that organisation and to make a plan for the coming years. In that role, he ensures that the World Masters and the World Championship are back on the calendar after the bankruptcy of the BDO.
Today, Ashdown is known as the best spotter in the world. At almost every major tournaments he ensures that every arrow is captured perfectly by sending the director and cameramen to the correct places on the board.
First World Championship in 2014, last in 2019.
