Russ Bray started refereeing in 1993. Like many of today’s top referees this happened by accident when the regular referee did not show up during a county match. Bray is best known for his raw voice that is very recognizable.
Bray calls for the PDC since the 1996 World Matchplay. He was approached by the newly formed PDC to work alongside legendary officials Bruce Spendley and Freddie Williams. Russ was the referee for the first 9-darter by Phil Taylor at the 2002 World Matchplay against Chris Mason, this was also the first PDC 9-darter and the first on SKY Sports TV.
Besides working for the PDC Russ does voice overs for commercials. Obviously, Bray is also a much sought after referee during demonstrations and clinics around the world. The last few years Russ also appears as an announcer at boxing.
Away from the oche, Bray lives on a farm with his wife in Cambridgeshire, and spends his time mucking out the stables, or on a nearby golf course, where he often plays with 1983 world champion Keith Deller. He also plays the guitar in his spare time.
After the 2024 World Championship final, Russ Bray retires from the PDC when it comes to calling the majors. He will remain active as an ambassador and caller at the World Series tournaments. In 2024 he is also inducted into the PDC Hall of Fame.
First World Championship in 1997, his last in 2024.
