The seventh edition of the European Championship was held in Müelheim in Germany for the third time. From October 24 to 26 the top 16 of the world played in Germany. Added to that 16 were the top eight from the ProTour Order of Merit, top seven from the European Order of Merit and one Scandinavian qualifier.

Michael van Gerwen took the title in 2014 for the first time in his career and does so convincingly. He defeats Terry Jenkins in the final, who reaches a major final for the ninth time in his career, but once again is left empty-handed. Van Gerwen toughest match comes in the second round against the Northern Irishman Brendan Dolan, but at the decisive moments Dolan misses and Mighty Mike grabs victory. In the semi-final against compatriot Raymond van Barneveld Van Gerwen also falls behind, but a nine-darter helps him towards the final.

Many of the other favourites exit the tournament early. Gary Anderson loses in the first round to Terry Jenkins. James Wade also plays only one match, he loses to Ronny Huybrechts in the first round. Defending champion Adrian Lewis is not doing any better; he goes out first round against Jelle Klaasen. Phil Taylor still wins his first match, but goes out a round later against Stephen Bunting in an fantastic match.
