The sixteenth edition of the European Championship was held in the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund from October 26 to 29. Five Dutchmen had a shot at the title, but it was Peter Wright who won the European Championship for the second time after a final against James Wade.

The first round is uneventful for the Dutch: Raymond van Barneveld (against Michael Smith) and Dirk van Duijvenbode (against James Wade) immediately lose their first match. There was success for Michael van Gerwen (who survived match darts against Madars Razma), Gian van Veen (6-1 against Damon Heta with an average of 107.34) and Danny Noppert (6-0 against Andrew Gilding with an average of 106.09).

Peter Wright starts the tournament with a narrow 6-5 win over Gabriel Clemens. Title holder Ross Smith loses 6-3 to Ricardo Pietreczko in the first round. Two-time winner Rob Cross reached the second round with a 6-2 victory over Dimitri van den Bergh.

In the second round, the three Dutchmen all managed to win: Noppert beats Cross 10-7, Van Gerwen beat Pietreczko with the same scores and Van Veen triumphed 10-6 against Daryl Gurney. Peter Wright beats Michael Smith 10-4 while Gerwyn Price is too strong for Nathan Aspinall: 10-5.

Van Gerwen and Van Veen meet in the last eight. The debutant plays a good match and manages to beat four-time winner Van Gerwen 10-6. Noppert also advances to the semi-finals: he beats Gerwyn Price 10-8 after he is 7-0 down. Wright wins an exciting match against Chris Dobey (10-8) and Wade also reaches the semi-finals after a 10-6 win over Luke Humphries.

Two Dutchmen in the semi-finals, but both fail to reach the final. Gian van Veen has a difficult match against James Wade and loses 11-9. Danny Noppert plays a good game against Peter Wright, but the Scot manages to secure a place in the final with a 11-8 victory.

Wright and Wade will face each other in the final of the European Championship, just like in 2020. The winner will also be the same as three years before: Wright is better than Wade throughout the match and takes the final and the title after an 11-6 victory. He can call himself now European champion for the second time.
