The ninth edition of the European Championship was held in Belgium for the second time from 28 to 30 October. This year, the top 32 of the new 'Euro Tour rankings played in Hasselt.

Defending champion Michael van Gerwen finds himself 3-5 down in the first round and survives a match dart from Simon Whitlock, but in the end wins the match. That does not apply to the fifth-seeded Kim Huybrechts and sixth seed Dave Chisnall. They lose to James Wilson and Kyle Anderson respectively. Alan Norris (7) also loses to the unseeded Phil Taylor but this s less of a surprise.

The remaining seeded players all reach the quarterfinals and the top four seeds will reach the semi-finals. Mensur Suljovic wins his semi-final by beating Peter Wright and for the first time in his career qualifies for the final of a major TV tournament. The Serbian born Austrian has also beaten Phil Taylor 10-3 in the quarterfinals. In the other semi-final Michael van Gerwen is just a little better in the end of the match against James Wade. The Dutchman wins 11-7 and reaches the final of this tournament for the third time in succession.

In the final Suljovic has no chance against a phenomenal Van Gerwen who throws an average of almost 112 per turn, Suljovic does not come close to his previous level and wins only one leg. The Austrian however does rise to number seven in the world rankings, his highest position ever. Michael van Gerwen wins the European Championship for the third consecutive time, he now has nineteen majors in total.
