The 18th edition of the European Championship was held in Dortmund from October 23rd to 26th. The 32 best players from the 2025 Eurotour battled for the title. After a thrilling tournament, Gian van Veen claimed his first major title with a final victory over Luke Humphries.
For Van Veen, the tournament kicked off with a match against Damon Heta. The Dutchman threw a strong match, defeating the Australian 6-3. He then faced Ryan Searle in the last sixteen. Searle didn't throw a great match, but Van Veen did: with an average of almost 110, Van Veen won 10-2 and advanced to the quarterfinals. There, he faced Ryan Joyce. It was another match with an average of over 100 for Van Veen, who defeated the Englishman 10-5. Besides Van Veen, two other Dutch players performed well in Dortmund: both Danny Noppert and Michael van Gerwen reached the semifinals. Noppert defeated Dirk van Duijvenbode (6-3), Nathan Aspinall (10-7), and Ricardo Pietreczko (10-5). On his way to the semifinals, Van Gerwen defeated Wessel Nijman (6-5), Chris Dobey (10-5), and Daryl Gurney (10-7). Luke Littler lost in the second round, when James Wade proved too strong for "The Nuke" with a 10-7 victory.
Van Gerwen then played Van Veen in the semifinals. It was a close match between the two compatriots, with Van Veen ultimately proving too strong with an 11-9 victory. This qualified him for the final of the European Championship for the first time. He will play against Luke Humphries, who defeated Danny Noppert 11-8 in the other semifinal.
Which of the two finalists will win the European Championship for the first time? For Van Veen, it would be his first major title. It promises to be a long, exciting final, with playing the full length of the match. At 10-10, Van Veen receives one match dart, which he immediately converts. This wins him a major title for the first time in his career and puts him in the top ten of the world rankings for the first time. Humphries loses the final, but remains the world number one.
