The UK Open 2016 was held for the third time in Minehead. The tournament was played from March 4th till 6th. Michael van Gerwen becomes the third player to defend the UK Open title successfully. He defeats Peter Wright in the final for the second year in a row, this time 11-4.
Van Gerwen is the big favorite ahead of the tournament and lives up to the expectations. Victories over Ryan Harrington, Rob Cross, Kim Huybrechts and Barry Lynn bring him into the semi-finals. In the semi-final he is 1-4 behind against Phil Taylor, but wins nine of the last ten legs and reaches the final seemingly effortless.
Peter Wright makes a second successful trip to the final. The Scot played a strong tournament. He beats veterans Steve Beaton, Terry Jenkins and Darren Webster and then beats Joe Cullen in the quarterfinals. In the semi-final, he defeats Dutchman Jelle Klaasen. Wright reaches a major TV final for the third time in his career, but it is also the third time that he meets Michael van Gerwen in that final and the third time he has to settle for second place.
The story of the UK Open in 2016 is also written by the Rileys pubqualifiers Rob Cross and Barry Lynn. Cross reaches the last 32 where he loses to an in form Michael van Gerwen who twice hits a 170 finish in that match and a nine darter. Barry Lynn does even better. The binman from Braintree knocks out the reigning World Champion Gary Anderson in the last 32. He also beats Brendan Dolan and Stuart Kellett. Eventually, Lynn must bow to Van Gerwen in the quarterfinals. However he is the first ever pubqualifier who reaches to the last eight.
