The first ever UK Open, in 2003, features some early surprises. Because of the open system and a new draw after every round of play, everyone could face everyone. The number three in the world, Ronnie Baxter, lost to James Wade. Canadian ace John Part, number 2 in the world, was defeated by Colin Monk.
Shayne Burgess and Paul Williams were the surprises in the semi-finals. They played each other and Burgess made sure he was the first surprising finalist. Taylor was the other finalist and he defeated Burgess easily to be the first UK Open champion ever.
