The eighteenth edition of the UK Open was played in the Butlins Resort in Minehad from 6 to 8 March. 160 Players entered the tournament on Friday. After three days of darts on eight different stages Michael van Gerwen crowned himself UK Open champion for the third time. The Dutchman beat Gerwyn Price in an enjoyable finale. The Welshman took the lead in the opening stage, but double trouble cost him the title.
Van Gerwen had a tough draw. The world number one had to beat last year’s winner Nathan Aspinall in his first round. The Dutchman faced the unknown Jason Lowe and James Wade on Saturday. Van Gerwen needed a last leg decider against Lowe, but showed his class against The Machine. Mighty Mike ended the match with an average of 108 and beat Wade 10-4. In the quarterfinal Van Gerwen was far too good for Rob Cross and won 10-4 once again. The Dutch ace met Daryl Gurney in the semi-final. Van Gerwen meant business during that encounter and threw a ninedarter in front of a stunning crowd. MVG beat Gurney 11-3.
Gerwyn Price started his run with a 10-3 win over Danny Noppert. The Welshman defeated Rapid Ricky Evans and Gabriel Clemens on Saturday. The Iceman had to go deep to beat the German Giant: 10-9. Price faced Dimitri van den Bergh on Sunday. Both players showed their class on the main stage with an average of 102 points, but it was The Iceman who did win: 10-5. The world number three played against Jonny Clayton in an all Welsh semi-final. Price took the first five legs, was in control over the match and defeated his fellow countryman 11-4.
Clayton had a good UK Open as well. ‘The Ferret’ did beat Scott Waites, Joe Cullen, Chris Dobey and Jamie Hughes and threw a perfect leg in his quarterfinal against Hollywood.
