The UK Open 20176 was held in Minehead for the fourth time. The tournament was played from March 3rd till 5th. Via the six UK Open qualifiers 96 players qualified for the main event. The remaining 32 participants came as usual from several regional qualifying tournaments. Defending champion Michael van Gerwen had to pull out through injury. He had qualified, but in the run-up to the tournament was struck with a back injury.

In addition to the cancellation of Michael van Gerwen, Phil Taylor wasn’t there for the first time and that proved to be the recipe for a very open edition of the UK Open. When Gary Anderson, James Wade and Adrian Lewis also exit the tournament early on, Peter Wright becomes the big favourite. Peter Wright would more than live up to that role; in inehead the colourful Scot claims his first major TV title. He defeated Gerwyn Price 11-6 in the final.

On his way to the final Snakebite defeated James Richardson, Dave Chisnall, Rob Cross, Raymond van Barneveld and Daryl Gurney. He won all his matches convincingly, only in the quarterfinal against Raymond van Barneveld Wright is put under real pressure, but he overcomes his nerves and wins that bout. Gerwyn Price also beats a number of high regarded opponents en route to his first Grand Final; Justin Pipe, David Pallett, Paul Hogan, Ian White and Alan Norris must all bow to the Welshman.

One of the major surprises of this edition is Paul Hogan. The English veteran pub qualifier beats Gary Anderson and Adrian Lewis, but loses in the last 16 to Gerwyn Price. Besides the first title for Wright, the first final for Price, the 2017 UK Open is also the first major PDC semi-final for Alan Norris.
