UK Open 2015 - Mastercaller

The UK Open 2015 was played in Minehead for the second time from 6 till 8 March. After six UK Open qualifiers and 32 players who managed to get through regional qualifiers, the total participants was 147 players.

Michael van Gerwen would be crowned the new UK Open champion after three fantastic days of darts in the South West of England. In the final, the Dutchman defeated Peter Wright 11-5. The final was balanced untill 4-4, but then the Dutchman accelerated. A 164 finish in the tenth leg meant the breaking point in the final.

On his way to the final Van Gerwen would score some impressive victories. He defeated Belgian ace Kim Huybrechts in the last 16 with an average of 114.91, his highest average ever on TV. In the quarterfinals, the South African Devon Petersen was defeated and in the semi-finals Mighty Mike was too strong for the surprise of the tournament Andrew Gilding 10-8.

Peter Wright had a very tough route to the final. The eccentric Scotsman successively defeated Steve Beaton, Raymond van Barneveld, John Henderson, Phil Taylor and Stephen Bunting. After a lesser period in his career, Wright played incredibly strong this weekend. In particular his match against Taylor who had an average of 108 was a beauty.

Defending champion Adrian Lewis would become the third player after James Wade and Phil Taylor, who was beaten in his first match the year after he claimed the title. Raymond van Barneveld was responsible for the elimination of Jackpot. Barney himself would outgunned one round later 9-1 by Peter Wright. The surprise of the UK Open 2015 was Andrew Gilding. The Englishman played a fantastic tournament and defeated Kevin Painter (9-0), Jelle Klaasen (9-5), James Wade (9-6) and Mensur Suljovic (9-8). Only Michael van Gerwen in the semi-final was too strong for Gilding. There was a particularly strong effort from the Dutchman needed to beat Gilding who would throw an average of 108.37 in this semi-final (8-10).
