Van Barneveld just joined the PDC before the UK Open and everyone hopes for an epic clash between Barney and Phil Taylor at the UK Open. In the quarterfinals, the two face each other in Bolton. Taylor grabs a 6-2 lead, but sees Barney play one of his best games ever. At 10-10 a deciding last leg is needed to proclaim the winner. Three missed matchdarts by Taylor give Barney the opportunity to finish 97 for the match.
Along with Van Barneveld, Alan Tabern, Barrie Bates and John Magowan reached the semi-finals. Van Barneveld is the better player and makes sure he is not surprised by one of them. Magowan is defeated in the semi-final and Bates in the final. The 2006 UK Open is the first big PDC-title for Barney and he silences his criticasters by beating Phil Taylor on his way to the finals.
