The 22nd edition of the UK Open was held in Butlins, Minehead from 1 to 3 March. A total of 158 players took a shot at the title. It was Dimitri van den Bergh who was able to put his name on the winner's trophy for the first time, after a final victory over Luke Humphries.
The tournament starts for Van den Bergh in the fourth round. He will compete against Brendan Dolan, quarter-finalist of the last World Championships. The Belgian wins an exciting match (10-8) and qualifies for the last 32. Here he plays against Vincent van der Voort. The unseeded Dutchman eventually lost 10-6 and saw Van den Bergh reach the next round. 'The Dreammaker' will face Jonny Clayton in the last 16. 'The Ferret' is not in the best form of his career and is therefore unable to beat Van den Bergh. Van den Bergh wins 10-7 and qualifies for the quarter-finals.
There are no Dutch players to be found in those quarter-finals. Michael van Gerwen immediately loses his first match (in the last 64) against Mensur Suljovic, while Dirk van Duijvenbode loses in the same round against Luke Humphries (10-7). Danny Noppert (the 2022 winner) survives the fourth round, but falls 10-9 against Martin Lukeman one round later. The best Dutchman this tournament is Gian van Veen: he reaches the last 16, but after victories over John Henderson, Florian Hempel and Graham Usher, he loses 10-8 to Damon Heta.
Van den Bergh has not a bad draw, because he will meet Martin Lukeman in the quarter-finals. The Englishman does not throw a bad match, but loses his quarter-final match 10-5. In the other quarter-finals there were victories for Damon Heta (10-8 against Luke Littler), Ricky Evans (10-7 against Rob Cross) and Luke Humphries (10-2 against Stephen Bunting). In the semi-finals, Van den Bergh is drawn against 'friend' Damon Heta. Van den Bergh manages to win the match 11-6, which means he is in the final of the UK Open for the first time. Here he plays against Luke Humphries: 'Cool Hand' beats Ricky Evans 11-2 and is in the final for the second time after 2021.
The first Belgian in the final of the UK Open also manages to take the first title: it will be a very exciting final that requires a very last and deciding leg. Van den Bergh is the coolest in this, which is why he manages to win a major tournament for the second time in his career (after the World Matchplay in 2020).
