The Winmau World Masters are held in the beginning of September for the first time in it’s history. The Royal Spa in Bridlington is the setting for this edition.
In 2009 the World Masters gets a surprising champion. Linda Ithurralde had reached the quarterfinals in 1982, but she wasn’t seen as a contender in 2009. She subsequently beat top players such as Tamara Schuur, Karin Krappen and Dee Bateman en route to the final. In the final she also beats the best player of her generation; Trina Gulliver.
Defending champion Francis Hoenselaar reaches the semi-finals where Gulliver beats her. It is Gulliver’s eighth final at the World Masters, but not her sixth title.
