The eleventh edition of the Players Championship Finals were held at the Butlins Minehead Resort in Minehead from from November 23 till 25. The tournament showed that there are plenty of opportunities for outsiders. For example, Stephen Bunting and Steve Lennon reached the last eight, and Danny Noppert even got to the semi-finals. The final battle is eventually fought between two big names: Michael van Gerwen and Daryl Gurney.
On his way to the final Van Gerwen shows little signs of weakness. In his first match, he is too strong for Matthew Edgar (6-1) and one round later he blows Keegan Brown of the stage with the same numbers. “Mighty Mike” encounters his first big challenge in the semi-final against Gary Anderson. After an exciting match, he claims a 11-9 victory to reach the final.
In contrast to the Dutchman, Daryl Gurney has a lot of trouble surviving his first rounds. After a few missed match darts from his opponent Ryan Searle in round two, "Superchin" fights on in Minehead. As the tournament progresses, the standard of the Northern-Irish player grows. He has no problems defeating Chris Doby and via a convincing 11-3 victory against Danny Noppert, Gurney reaches the final.
In the decisive battle, the players play an entertaining game. Nothing separates the two aces for a long time, but at 9-9, “Superchin” wins the most important leg of the match. In the final leg, Van Gerwen has a chance to turn the tide, but he fails to equalize by missing a 110-finish. Then it is Daryl Gurney who finishes from 85 via the Bulls-Eye, which assures him of his second Major title in his career.
