The 17th edition of the Players Championship Finals was held in Milton Keynes from 22 to 24 November. Title holder Luke Humphries successfully defended his title after a victory in the ‘dreamed final’ against Luke Littler.
The first round had a number of surprises. Michael van Gerwen lost 6-1 to Ian White, Thibault Tricole won 6-4 against Gerwyn Price and Stephen Burton won 6-4 against James Wade. The top seed Chris Dobey was also eliminated immediately: he lost 6-1 to Nathan Aspinall. Luke Humphries easily won against Gabriel Clemens (6-2) and Luke Littler won with an average of 112.73 against Rob Cross without losing a leg: 6-0.
In the last 32, Littler plays against European champion Ritchie Edhouse. Both men throw an average of 105, but it is Littler who wins 6-2. Humphries initially has a difficult match against Raymond van Barneveld, but beats the Dutchman 6-3. Dirk van Duijvenbode, Jermaine Wattimena, Danny Noppert and Niels Zonneveld do go through to the third round.
In that third round, Van Duijvenbode and Wattimena meet each other. The losing European Championship finalist (Wattimena) has a hard time and loses 10-5 to his compatriot. Noppert also falls in the last 16: he is defeated 10-3 by Littler. The last Dutchman (Zonneveld) then faces Grand Prix champion Mike de Decker. The Belgian is in excellent form and wins 10-4. Humphries plays a decent match against Damon Heta and wins 10-6 against the Australian.
Six Englishmen, a Belgian and a Dutchman can then return on Sunday for the quarter finals. The Dutchman (Van Duijvenbode) plays an exciting match against Connor Scutt. A deciding nineteenth leg ultimately ensures that 'The Titan' wins 10-9. The last remaining Belgian loses his quarter-final match: De Decker loses 10-3 to Littler. Humphries beats Ryan Joyce 10-5 and Ross Smith convinces against Scott Williams: 10-3.
Will there be a dream final between the two best players of 2024 (Humphries and Littler)? The answer is: yes. Littler plays an exciting semi-final against Smith, and beats his compatriot 11-9. Humphries does not get it for free either, but is the better player against Van Duijvenbode (11-8). 'Cool Hand' can now try to prolong his 2023 title. He plays a strong final against Littler and quickly takes a nice lead. He eventually wins 11-7, meaning he can call himself Players Championship Finals champion for the second time.
