The fifteenth edition of the Players Championships Finals was held in Minehead from 25-27 November. The top 64 players from the 2022 Players Championships took part in this tournament. Michael van Gerwen won the title for the sixth time, beating Rob Cross in the final.
Title holder Peter Wright is the major absentee from the Players Championships finals. Due to his wife Joanne's illness, the two-time world champion had other (more important) priorities. Wright was seeded ninth and will be replaced by Dutchman Gian van Veen.
Damon Heta is the first seed for this tournament, having been the best player in the thirty Players Championships in 2022. The Australian loses in the first round to the unknown Ricardo Pietreczko from Germany. The German lost to Callan Rydz in the next round.
Michael van Gerwen had an excellent Players Championships Finals despite only being seeded 22nd in Minehead. In the first round, the Dutchman faced off against Ryan Meikle. Next, the Vlijmenaar beat the difficult to play against Scotsman, Cameron Menzies. Dimitri Van den Bergh would be his next victim.
In the quarterfinals, it was a Dutch head-to-head against Danny Noppert. Van Gerwen won 10-7. In the semi-final, 'Mighty Mike' beat Luke Humphries and saved the best of Gerwen until the final. He defeated Rob Cross 11-6 and threw a nine darter.
In addition to semi-final places for van Gerwen, Cross and Humphries, Jonny Clayton also managed to qualify for the last four. There, 'Voltage' is too strong for the Welshman with 11-7.
Josh Rock, the discovery of 2022 and seeded 11th, and loses in the first round to the Scotsman Cameron Menzies. The promising Northern Irishman will have to wait for his first success at a TV tournament.
The final between Michael van Gerwen and Rob Cross is fantastic from a Dutch point of view. Rob Cross takes the first leg in 13 darts, but the next five legs are all for van Gerwen. This includes a nine-dart round. The Englishman struggles but comes back to 7-6. A fantastic 170 finish from the three-time world champion hits Cross so hard that he won’t take another leg this match.
