The 2013 Players Championships Finals were held from 29 November to 1 December in Minehead. The 2013 edition of the tournament would become Michael van Gerwen’s triumph. The Dutchman was seeded first because he had won The Players Championship Order of Merit. Yet he was not the favorite for victory before the tournament. In the months prior to the tournament, Van Gerwen had known a lesser period and in particular on the televised tournaments he lost to Adrian Lewis a few times in a row.
Precisely against that same Adrian Lewis Mighty Mike turned things around in the second round. After being 3-6 down the real Van Gerwen stood up and won six consecutive legs. He concluded the match with an average of 107. From that moment there seemed to be a burden lifted of his shoulders and he played great the rest of the tournament. In the final he defeated the undisputed number one in the world, Phil Taylor, who had been phenominal in the months leafing up to this tournament. Against Taylor, Van Gerwen again had to come back from being 3-6 down, but what he showed then was absolute class. Eight of the last nine legs went to the Dutchman who took his fourth major title.
