The 23rd edition of the WDF World Cup was held in Esbjerg in Denmark. From 26 to 30 September the tournament was played at the Blue Water Dokken in Esbjerg. The tournament was initially going to be held in 2021, but the global corona pandemic forced the tournament to be postponed by two years.
Three countries are making their debut this World Cup. The Faroe Islands, Guernsey, and Liechtenstein. Marco Meijer from the Netherlands and Christian Sørensen from Denmark. The Netherlands is the defending champion in the mens event. For the women it is England defending its title and for the youth England was also the strongest in 2019.
In the singles, 14 different countries make up the last 16, a sign that the sport is becoming increasingly global. In the end it is Berry van Peer from the Netherlands and Frank Bruns from Germany who made it to the final.
Van Peer wins in the last 16 against the Northern Irishman Richard Dunlop and then beats the American Bruce Robbins and the Catalan Carlos Arola. His surprising opponent in the final wins successively against Filip Ljubenko from Croatia, Markus Straub from Austria and the Canadian Robbie Mills. In the final, Van Peer quickly takes a big lead, and he doesn't give it away. He wins 7-3 and takes gold.
Berry van Peer is the fifth Dutchman to win individual gold at a World Cup. After Roland Scholten in 1993, Raymond van Barneveld in 1997, 1999 and 2003, Dick van Dijk in 2005 and Wesley Harms in 2013. Frank Bruns is the first German man ever to reach the final of the singles tournament.
