The 2022 Lakeside WDF World Championship was held between April 2 and 10 at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green. Forty-eight players from around the world competed for the title. Northern Ireland's Neil Duff takes the world title for the first time, making it the first Northern Ireland world champion ever. In 2020, the BDO stops organizing the tournament that has been organized under their auspices since the first edition. The World Darts Federation adopts the tournament but has had to postpone playing it several times due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The Lakeside Country Club was chosen as the location for the first edition under the WDF flag, with a new set-up that allows more players from various countries to qualify for this World Championship. With 16 different nationalities, that promise is fulfilled. In the first round, the unseeded players play against each other, after which the 16 seeded players enter in round two. In the first round, the curtain falls for three-time world champion Martin Adams who loses to Jarred Cole. Also, pre-tournament favorites like Paul Hogan, Connor Scutt and Mark Barilli do not survive the first round.
In the semi-finals however, four seeded players remain. The Dutchman Richard Veenstra achieves this for the second time in his career, but also must settle for bronze for the second time. He loses to Northern Irishman Neil Duff. Veenstra had already beaten the 18-year-old average record of Raymond van Barneveld in the last 16. That stood at 103.83, Veenstra tightens it up to 104.91 in his match against Luke Littler. In the other semi-final it is the Frenchman Thibault Tricole who beats Scotsman Cameron Menzies in an exciting match. Menzies was previously responsible for the elimination of defending champion Wayne Warren.
In the final it is the Frenchman who takes a 2-0 and 3-1 lead in the match, but then sees Duff pass by. From 3-3 it goes via 4-4 to 5-5 and the eleventh and final set must bring the decision. Neil Duff is the better of the two in this and so he crowns himself as the first Lakeside WDF World Champion.
