The Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship of 2018 was held from 6 to 14 January at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green. Forty players from around the world took a shot at the title, including the first player ever from Brunei; Pengiran Mohamed. Turkey also participated for the first time in a World Championship with Umit Uygunsözlü.
Glen Durrant won the 41st edition of the BDO World Championship for the second time in a row. He successively beat Gary Robson, Darryl Fitton, Jim Williams, Scott Waites and Mark McGeeney in the final. Especially against Jim Williams, Durrant has a tough match, but he manages to turn a 1-4 deficit into a 5-4 victory.
In the final, it stays close until the end between McGeeney and Durrant. Only in the thirteenth and decisive set Durrant shows that he is the coolest of the two. McGeeney goed 2-0 up in that last set and gets two matchdarts, but it is ultimately Durrant who takes the win by winning the last four legs in a row.
The big surprise of this edition of the World Championship is the German player Michael Unterbuchner. The qualifier defeats Dave Cameron from Canada in the preliminary round, but then surprisingly beats the World’s number three Jamie Hughes in the first round. He continues his strong run with victories over Martin Phillips and Richard Veenstra as he becomes the first German ever to reach the semi-final of a World Championship. In it he must acknowledge his superior in Mark McGeeney.
After Eric Bristow, Raymond van Barneveld and Martin Adams, Glen Durrant becomes the fourth player to successfully defend his BDO World Cup title. Mark McGeeney is the second player ever after Mike Gregory to get match darts to become world champion and eventually is not crowned it.
