The 31st edition of the PDC World Darts Championship was held at the Alexandra Palace in London from December 15 to January 3. 96 players had a shot at the world title. Top favorite Luke Humphries became world champion for the first time after a victory in the final over the sensational Luke Littler.
For Humphries, the tournament starts in the last 64 with a match against Lee Evans. It will be an easy 3-0 victory for 'Cool Hand', which means he will advance to the last 32. Here he has a difficult match: the German Ricardo Pietreczko takes a 3-1 lead in sets, but sees Humphries fight back to win 4-3.
Humphries also does not get it easy in the last 16. Compatriot Joe Cullen plays a strong match and is the first to have the chance to win the match. However, he missed two match darts, after which Humphries narrowly won this match 4-3 in sets. In the quarter-finals Humphries again plays against a fellow countryman. This time it's Dave Chisnall taking on Humphries. After two difficult matches, Humphries is back on track for a world title: he beats Chisnall 5-1 and has an average of 103.50.
In the semi-finals Humphries will face surprise Scott Williams. Williams, who earlier this tournament already defeated Haruki Muramatsu (3-0), Danny Noppert (3-0), Martin Schindler (4-3) and Damon Heta (4-1), wins 5-3 during the quarter-finals against title favorite Michael van Gerwen. But the man with the yellow shoes will ultimately not reach the final: Humphries plays his best match of the tournament, throws an average of 108.74 and wins the match 6-0 in sets.
Humphries will play his first World Championship final against Luke Littler. The only sixteen-year-old Englishman is the sensation of the tournament with high averages and beautiful finishes. In the first round he beat Christian Kist 3-0 with an average of 106.12. A round later he beats UK Open champion Andrew Gilding 3-1. In the last 32 it is Matt Campbell who is defeated (4-1) and a round later Raymond van Barneveld has little chance against 'The Nuke' (4-1 with an average of 105). Littler then will play Brendan Dolan in the quarterfinals. The Northern Irishman, who managed to beat Gerwyn Price and Gary Anderson earlier in this tournament, has little to say and deserved to lose 5-1. Littler is then one step away from the World Championship final. He will play against former winner Rob Cross in the last four. Cross plays a strong match, but could not prevent Littler from taking a 6-2 victory.
The final will then be between title favorite Luke Humphries and World Championship debutant Luke Littler. It is the younger of the two who dominates at the start of the final: he takes a 2-0 and 4-2 lead and even gets the chance to take a 5-2 lead in sets. However, that does not happen, after which Humphries lets his strength and experience speak. 'Cool Hand' wins five sets in a row and ultimately takes a 7-4 victory. Together, Luke Humphries takes his first World Championship title and can call himself the new number 1 in the world. After his strong World Championship, debutant Littler is immediately in the top 32 of the world rankings.
