On the eve of the 2002 WC, the expectations are high. Last year a lot of players made the switch from BDO to PDC, frontman like Ronnie Baxter, Richie Burnett, Kevin Painter, Andy Jenkins, Steve Beaton and Chris Mason are all a welcome addition to the PDC playing field. Despite this, none of them make the semi finale in their debut. Ronnie Baxter manages to make it to the quarter finale, but loses there to Peter Manley, who later in the finale gets beaten 0-7 by Phil Taylor. He takes his 8th title in a row, his 10th in total. Colin Lloyd does shine a light on himself in 2002. He defeats the number 1 of the world, Alan Warriner and makes it to the semi finale. Notable is that it’s the only semi finale Llyod will ever make in the WC, and that for a player who would later become number 1 of the world, and would later win 2 other tv-tournaments.

2002 is the first year they worked a 16 player system, where only 2 players would be eliminated in the first round. Jamie Harvey, placed 15th, loses to Shayne Burgess, placed 16th, and Alex Roy loses to Colin Lloyd.
