1997 shows us the same finale as the year before. For the 3rd time in the 4 year history of the World Championship the face-off is between Phil Taylor and Dennis Priestley. The story of 1997 is the story of Eric Bristow; the 5 times world champion of the Embassy is suddenly back in shape. Phil Taylor’s discoverer has had years of darthitis, but in 1997 the hero of darts in England has returned for one last year in the spotlights.
Backed up by the roaring crowds in Circus Tavern he fights his way past Bob Anderson and Alan Warriner to the semi finales, where he, for the last time, will compete against Phil Taylor. In one of the most spectacular matches ever seen in the WC it’s Bristow who pushes Taylor to his limits. The Power staggers, but doesn’t fall and wins the match with 5-4. This is the last time we see Eric Bristow in the spotlights of a mayor tournament, but he says goodbye in style. Taylor beats Priestley 6-3, who himself won against Peter Evison.
