The German Darts Championship was held in Hildesheim from 11 to 13 March. Michael van Gerwen won the tournament for the third time, by beating Rob Cross in the final.
Six Dutchmen come into action on the first day. Two of them manage to qualify for the next round. Martijn Kleermaker beats Mario Vandenbogaerde 6-4 and Vincent van der Voort beats compatriot Gian van Veen 6-2. Jimmy Hendriks, Jermaine Wattimena and Luc Peters lose in the first round, just like Van Veen.
In the last 32 Martin Lukeman is surprisingly too strong for Damon Heta (6-5). Michael van Gerwen beats Jose Justicia 6-3, but Vincent van der Voort loses 6-4 to Ryan Searle. Rob Cross manages to beat the other remaining Dutchman, Kleermaker (6-2). Ultimately, the tournament has eight great quarter-finalists: Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright, Dimitri van den Bergh, Michael Smith, Daryl Gurney, Jonny Clayton, Rob Cross and Karel Sedlacek. The Czech beats Jose de Sousa 6-4 in the last 16.
Unfortunately, in the quarterfinals, Peter Wright has to withdraw due to an injury, giving Van Gerwen a bye towards the semifinals. In it he will compete against Van den Bergh, who manages to beat Smith 6-3. Gurney beats Clayton in a decisive leg (6-5) and Cross beats Sedlacek 6-4. In the end, it is Michael van Gerwen and Rob Cross who will play the final. Van Gerwen narrowly beats Van den Bergh 7-6, while Cross is too strong for Gurney 7-4.
In the final Cross takes a 2-0 and 4-1 lead, but it is Van Gerwen who manages to come back with a strong game. The Dutchman eventually throws an average of 104.08 and wins the final with 8-5. With this he manages to win the German Darts Championship for the third time in his career.
