From 14 to 16 September, the fourth edition of the International Darts Open was held at the Sachsenarena in Riesa. The EuroTour gets a new winner. Welshman Gerwyn Price beats Simon Whitlock 8-3 in the final.
It is a surprising tournament in which for the first time in the history of the EuroTour not one of the four highest ranked player’s reaches the quarterfinals. Defending champion and number one seed Peter Wright loses his first match immediately to Ryan Searle. Mensur Suljovic loses to Danny Noppert, Ian White to James Richardson and Jonny Clayton is the loser against Steve West. This opens the way for others and Whitlock and Price make the best use of this.
Simon Whitlock defeats James Wilson, Steve Beaton, James Richardson and Danny Noppert on his way to the final. Price in turn beats John Henderson, Daryl Gurney, Ryan Searle and Steve West. In the final, Whitlock starts strong, he gets a break an ledas 3-2, but then has to allow six legs in a row to Price and also the win.
With his victory, Price takes the biggest victory in his career; he is the 24th winner of a EuroTour tournament. For Whitlock, the counter stands at one win from five finals; The Dutch Darts Masters of 2012.
