The tenth edition of the European Darts Open was held from 24 to 26 March at the Ostermann Arena in Leverkusen. Gerwyn Price managed to win the title for the first time after a narrow victory in the final over Dirk van Duijvenbode.
Price starts the tournament in the second round with a 6-5 victory over Krzysztof Ratajski and an average of 109.93. In the last sixteen it is World Champion Michael Smith who is defeated 6-2. Price throws an average of 110.49 in this game and shows that he is a serious contender for the title. One round later (in the quarter finals) he beats Michael van Gerwen 6-4. His average is again very high: 106.28.
In the semi-finals, Danny Noppert waits for 'The Iceman'. In the end it is the man from Wales who wins 7-4 and is therefore in the final of this tournament for the first time. In that final he will meet a Dutchman for the third time this tournament: Dirk van Duijvenbode. Van Duijvenbode is in the final after victories over Ted Evetts (6-3), Ross Smith (6-5), Josh Rock (6-3) and Rob Cross (7-6).
The final will be an exciting one and both men have a chance to win the title. With a 7-6 score in favor of Van Duijvenbode, the Dutchman has the opportunity to win the match. But after his first match dart is thrown on the inside at double eighteen, he chooses to split the remaining eighteen points with two darts in hand. In the end he misses his only other dart for the match on the double eight, after which Price forces a decisive leg with a 108 finish. 'The Iceman' is supreme in this, so that he still wins the European Darts Open for the first time (8-7).
