The tenth edition of the World Cup of Darts was held in the Salzburgarena in Salzburg from 6 to 8 November. Due to the Coronavirus, the tournament was played without an attending audience. Although SKY Sports did broadcast the World Cup of Darts, spectators were not allowed to attend the event.
Reigning champion Scotland does attend the event, but without Peter Wright and Gary Anderson. Both players do not want to leave the United Kingdom because of the Coronavirus. John Henderson and Robert Thornton replace Wright and Anderson. Portugal and Latvia attend the tournament last minute because China and Singapore are not able make it to Austria due to Covid-19.
Team Wales wins the World Cup of Darts after an one-sided final against Team England. Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton win their single match against Michael Smith and Rob Cross. The doubles match is a close game, but Price takes out 64 to win the match and the final. Team Wales finishes the doubles match with a stunning average of 103. Price and Clayton start their campaign with a comfortable win against Russia: 5-0. Wales faces Scotland in the second round. The Welshmen need a doubles match against Thornton and Henderson to win. A doubles decider is also required in their quarter final against Australia. Team Wales beat Germany in the semis. ‘The Iceman’ and ‘The Ferret’ win their single matches against Gabriel Clemens and Max Hopp with 4-2.
England starts their campaign with a 5-3 win against The Philippines. England survives a scare in the eighth finals against Austria. Rowby-John Rodrigues misses multiple match darts to send Smith and Cross packing. England faces Belgium in the semis. Belgian aces Kim Huybrechts and Dimitri van den Bergh both have darts to win, but do not succeed to win their matches.
