From May 2nd to 4th, the eleventh edition of the European Darts Grand Prix was held in Sindelfingen, Germany. Almost all the prominent players are present, including defending champion Gary Anderson.
No less than eight of the sixteen seeded players lose their first match, including the top seed Damon Heta, who loses to Martin Lukeman and number two Michael van Gerwen, who loses to fellow dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode. Jonny Clayton (4) and Stephen Bunting (5) also do not advance to the next round. They lose to Andrew Gilding and Cameron Menzies.
Gary Anderson starts the tournament in the second round against the Dutchman Gian van Veen, whom he beats 6-5. In the last 16 he faces Rob Cross, whom he sends home 6-3. In the quarterfinals he wins against Martin Lukeman and in the semi-final the Flying Scottsman beats Dirk van Duijvenbode 7-2 and qualifies for the final.
In this final he will face the Englishman Andrew Gilding. Goldfinger starts in the first round and reaches the final after victories over Gabriel Clemens (6-5), Jonny Clayton (6-5), Danny Noppert (6-3), Peter Wright (6-1) and Luke Woodhouse (7-3).
Gary Anderson retained the Elten Safety Shoes European Darts Grand Prix title with a comprehensive 8-0 victory over Andrew Gilding on Sunday evening.
The 54-year-old produced a clinical display on the outer ring to secure the £30,000 top prize, punishing Gilding’s doubling woes to become the first player to successfully retain the European Darts Grand Prix.
Former UK Open champion Gilding squandered seven darts at double across the opening two legs, and that set the tone for a one-sided final. Anderson conjured up a sensational 141 checkout in leg four, before following up an 84 finish on the bull with a brace of 14-darters to cap off a ruthless performance.
