From 4 to 6 May, the Glaspalast in Sindelfingen was the setting for the European Darts Grand Prix for the fifth consecutive year. It was certainly not the first time that Michael van Gerwen won a EuroTour tournament, but he rarely won a tournament so convincingly and with such high averages.
From the first round the Dutchman was razor sharp. He successively beat Alan Tabern (103.04), Darren Webster (104.80), Dave Chisnall (109.54) and Michael Smith (109.59) en route to the final. Webster and Chisnall in particular offered more than good resistance, but eventually had to bow to the Dutchman. In the final it was James Wade who waited.
The Machine reached the final of a EuroTour tournament for the first time in almost 2 years. Back then in 2016 Hamburg was the city for Wade and he beat Dave Chisnall. This time it was Michael van Gerwen in Sindelfingen and that turned out to be a different matter. Wade played a strong tournament with victories over Max Hopp, John Henderson, Rob Cross, Simon Whitlock and Danny Noppert. In the final Wade was immediately broken in the first leg and he could not repair that break all match. Up to 5-3 in favor of Van Gerwen everything goes with the darts, but then the Englishman is broken again and his resistance is also broken. With an average of 110.87 and a score of 8-3, Mighty Mike again emphasizes his superiority at the moment.
It is Van Gerwens 23rd EuroTour win, his third in 2018. James Wade remains on two EuroTour victories from four finals. Dutchman Danny Noppert gets to the semi-final in a EuroTour tournament for the first time. For Jamie Lewis it was three years ago that he had reached the quarterfinals on the EuroTour for the last time.
