From 16 to 18 October, the Glaspalast in Sindelfingen hosted the European Darts Grand Prix for the seventh consecutive year. In a year plagued by the Corona virus, this tournament could go ahead, and it became an edition with many surprises.
Due to the large number of cancellations, no fewer than nine Germans were able to make their appearance in front of their own audience. Still, not one of them would make it to the last 16. The surprising Portuguese star Jose de Sousa would win the tournament, he beats Michael van Gerwen in the final 8-4.
In his first match, he eases past German qualifier Pietreczko and then he beats one of the great favourites Gerwyn Price. Then Darius Labanauskas is defeated in the quarter finals and Ian White in the semi-finals in a thirteenth and decisiding leg.
Michael van Gerwen on his route to the final knocked out Mervyn King, Vincent van der Voort, Nathan Aspinall and Mensur Suljovic. Van der Voort and Aspinall did get match darts to beat MVG, but both men did not succeed.
In the final it is level at 2-2, but then The Special One from Portugal places a sprint of three legs in a row and Van Gerwen has no respons. The gap always remains at least two legs and eventually it finishes 8-4.
It is the first EuroTour victory for Jose de Sousa and he is now the thirtieth player to win a EuroTour. For Van Gerwen, the counter remains at 32 victories and he has not yet won a EuroTour title in 2020.
