PDC World Championship Youth 2024

On November 24, the grand final of the PDC World Youth Championship was held in Minehead, on the final night of the Players Championship Finals. Gian van Veen secured a first Dutch title after a final full of drama against Jurjen van der Velde.

On October 14, all participants come together to secure a place in the grand final. After the first selection, there are five Dutchmen left in the last 16. Eventually, Gian van Veen, Wessel Nijman and Jurjen van de Velde manage to reach the quarter-finals. Van Veen beats Nathan Rafferty 6-4 and Van der Velde is too strong for Adam Gawlas (6-5). Nijman plays an exciting duel against Dylan Slevin, but loses 6-5. Finally, Keane Barry also qualifies for the semi-finals, after a 6-1 victory over Jenson Walker.

The two semi-finals consist of a battle between the Netherlands and Ireland. Both Dutchmen manage to win: Van der Velde beats Barry 6-4 and qualifies for the final for the first time. Van Veen throws an average of 103.85 and beats Slevin 6-2. This means he will be in the grand final in Minehead for the second time, after 2023.

The final will be one that will be talked about for a while: Van de Velde starts well and takes a 2-0 lead, but then sees Van Veen get going and take a 3-2 lead. Van Veen seems to be on his way to the title, but then it Van de Velde who steps in. He even takes a 5-3 lead and is close to the title. A little later he misses two match darts and sees Van Veen come back to 5-5. In the eleventh and deciding leg, Van de Velde misses three match darts again, after which Van Veen throws an 82 finish to be crowned World Youth Champion. Van de Velde is left in tears, because he also misses out on a place at the 'big' World Championship.
