The ninth edition of the Gibraltar Darts Trophy was held from 14 to 16 October. The Australian Damon Heta immediately took the title in his first EuroTour final ever, after he was able to deal with Peter Wright (8-7) in an exciting final.
The sixth-seeded Heta starts the tournament with a 6-4 victory over Chris Dobey. In the last sixteen it is Joe Cullen who loses 6-1. In the quarter-finals it is a German who loses against Heta: Gabriel Clemens makes it an exciting match, but it is 'The Heat' who manages to take a 6-4 victory.
In the semifinals, Heta will face Michael van Gerwen. It will be a beautiful game in which both men throw an average of over a hundred. Only one can win and that's Heta with 8-7. This puts him in the final of a EuroTour tournament for the first time in his career. In it he meets the world champion: Peter Wright. Wright beats Rob Cross 7-1 in the semi-finals with an average of 108.66 and is likely to be the favorite in the final. But in the end a deciding fifteenth leg must be involved to declare a winner. That winner will be Damon Heta, so that he manages to win a EuroTour tournament for the first time in his life.
In addition to Michael van Gerwen, four other Dutchmen will play in Gibraltar. Danny Noppert surprisingly loses in the second round against Ryan Joyce (6-5). In the same round, Nathan Aspinall is too strong for Vincent van der Voort with the same figures. The other two Dutchmen (Wesley Plaisier and Dirk van Duijvenbode) do not get past the last sixteen. Plaisier loses 6-3 to Luke Humphries, while Van Duijvenbode, like Van der Voort, loses to Aspinall in a deciding leg.
