The seventh edition of the German Darts Grand Prix was held from 19 to 21 April in the Zenith Kulturhalle in Munich. It is the fourth Eurotour in 2024. Almost all top players are present in Munich. Defending champion Luke Humphries is absent this edition.
Six of the sixteen seeded players lose their first match, including 4th seed Jonny Clayton. This is the third time in a row that The Ferret loses a first round in the EuroTour this season, and the second time that he has lost to Martin Schindler.
Michael van Gerwen starts the tournament in the second round against the Belgian Kim Huybrechts, whom he beats 6-2. In the last 16 he plays against Ryan Searle. He beats him 6-1 and throws the perfect leg in this match. In the quarter finals he faces Ryan Joyce and wins 6-4. In the semi-final it is the Northern Irish Josh Rock who loses 7-2. Mighty Mike qualifies for the final.
In the final he faces fellow countryman Gian van Veen. The Giant starts in the first round and qualifies for the final after victories over Rene Eidams (6-2), Andrew Gilding (6-4), Martin Schindler (6-4), Ross Smith (6-3) and the top seed Luke Littler (7-4).
This set up a showdown against World Youth Champion Van Veen in a repeat of last year's Hungarian Darts Trophy decider, with Van Gerwen again coming out on top.
Van Veen defied a sluggish start to level at two apiece, following up a 12-dart break with a clinical 76 kill on tops, which sparked a sequence of eight consecutive holds of throw.
Van Gerwen snapped that streak with a 13-darter to move to the brink of victory at 7-5, and he capped off a memorable campaign by nailing double 16 to end his compatriot's spirited resistance.
Michael van Gerwen makes his comeback with an 8-5 victory to claim his record-extending 38th European Tour title in Munich. This was Mighty Mike’s 50th EuroTour final.
