The seventh edition of the European Darts Matchplay was held from 30 June to 2 July in Trier, Germany. Defending champion Luke Humphries won the tournament for the second year in a row, after an exciting final against Dirk van Duijvenbode.
Humphries kicks off the tournament against Marko Kantele. The Finnish opponent is a good start for the Englishman and therefore loses 6-1. A round later, Stephen Bunting is waiting for Humphries: a strong opponent, but thanks to an average of 109, Humphries wins 6-3. In the quarterfinals it is Nathan Aspinall who is defeated, this time 6-2. Also in this match 'Cool Hand Luke' throws an average of 109. During the semi-finals, Humphries' opponent James Wade throws an average of 109. Still, Humphries manages to win 7-5, because he himself also averages over 105. An absolute thriller in Trier!
Humphries will play in the final against Dirk van Duijvenbode. The Dutchman beats Andrew Gilding (6-2), Dimitri van den Bergh (6-0), Michael Smith (6-4) and Joe Cullen (7-6). It then seems that Van Duijvenbode will finally take his first EuroTour title. But a handful of match darts are missed by the Dutchman. Humphries manages to hit the winning double, so that after four lost EuroTour finals this year he finally comes out as the winner.
In the second round, there is a match between Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld. Van Gerwen plays for the first time since a tough operation and therefore loses 6-3 against 'Barney'. A round later, Van Barneveld also beats Ryan Searle (6-5), after which he loses 6-4 to Joe Cullen in the quarterfinals.
