The sixth edition of the European Darts Matchplay was held in the Arena of Trier from 1 to 3 July. It is already the ninth EuroTour tournament of 2022. For the fourth time this year Luke Humphries is the strongest, this time he beats Rowby-John Rodriguez in the final 8-7.
Due to cancellations of Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright and Michael Smith, among others, there seemed to be opportunities for other players. Especially when after round two a lot of seeded players are also out of the tournament. Gerwyn Price loses to Rowby-John Rodriguez, the number two on the seedings list Ryan Searle loses to Martin Lukeman and Jose de Sousa and Joe Cullen are also out after one game.
Luke Humphries does not suffer from this; he beats Cameron Menzies 6 to 4 and then also Lukas Wenig and Ian White with comfortable margins. In the semi-finals Stephen Bunting doesn't even win a leg and Humphries marches to his fourth final of this year on the EuroTour.
Rowby-John Rodriguez after knocking out Price also beats Gabriel Clemens, Nathan Aspinall and the surprising Let Madars Razma in the semi-final.
The final will be one to remember, Austrian Rodriguez takes a 4-0 lead, but sees Humphries come back to 4-4 thanks to a brilliant 156 finish. Then it's Rodriguez again who runs out to 6-4 and Humphries comes back to 6-6. Two legs later it is 7-7 and Rowby-John Rodriguez starts the final leg. Rodriguez misses a match dart to win his first senior PDC title and it is Humphries who keeps his cool and takes his fourth EuroTour title of this year via double four.
