The fifth edition of the European Darts Matchplay was held from 6 to 8 September in the Maimarkthalle in Mannheim. A different location than in previous years, but already visited earlier on the EuroTour in 2017, when the German Darts Grand Prix was staged here. It is the eleventh EuroTour tournament of 2019, the 76th in total and with a new winner; Joe Cullen.
Cullen had been in the quarterfinal of a EuroTour 20 times before, he also made the semi-final five times, but The Rockstar had never reached the final. Until September 8, 2019. Cullen consecutively beats Jamie Hughes, William O'Connor, Glen Durrant and James Wade to finally reach the final.
Michael van Gerwen is his opponent in the final. Mighty Mike beats Michael Smith, Mensur Suljovic, Krzysztof Ratajski and Dave Chisnall on his way. In the final, Cullen plays excellent from the start and always has the lead. Still, Van Gerwen is the favourite when there is 5-5 on the board. A few costly misses on the doubles by MVG, Cullen make good use of it and then closes the game out very well, he wins 8-5 and with that he takes the first EuroTour title in his career.
For Van Gerwen this was his 40th EuroTour final, his seventh in 2019. He has now lost the last three finals and that had never happened before. The total of titles for him is still 32.
