The Austrian Darts Open was held in Graz, Austria from April 29 to May 1. In total, eight Dutchmen took a shot at the title. In the end the tournament was won by Michael van Gerwen, who proved too strong for Danny Noppert in an all Dutch final.
In the first round, Noppert will face compatriot Jermaine Wattimena. After an exciting match, Noppert manages to win 6-5. Jeffrey de Zwaan beats Mensur Suljovic with the same numbers and Danny Jansen and Wesley Plaisier also survive the first round. Berry van Peer plays a difficult match and loses 6-1 to Jim Williams. Frenchman Thibault Tricole plays against Zoran Lerchbacher and narrowly loses 6-5 against the Austrian.
In the last 32 Noppert records a strong 6-3 victory over Dimitri van den Bergh. Michael van Gerwen meets Cameron Menzies and beats the Scot 6-3. De Zwaan has a difficult opponent in Jonny Clayton and therefore loses 6-4. Number 1 in the world Peter Wright already loses in his first match. Callan Rydz beats 'Snakebite' 6-3. Ryan Searle and Damon Heta also lose by the same numbers.
Four Dutchmen manage to reach the third round. Michael van Gerwen is 4-2 behind James Wade, but still manages to beat the English giant 6-5. Danny Noppert also plays a strong game and eventually goes through to the quarterfinals with a 6-2 victory over Jonny Clayton. Dirk van Duijvenbode also continues to the last eight. He beats home favorite Zoran Lerchbacher 6-1. Danny Jansen has no chance in his match against Ricky Evans and loses 6-0.
Van Gerwen and Van Duijvenbode will meet in the quarterfinals. Both men throw an average of over a hundred, but it is Van Gerwen who manages to take a big 6-1 victory. Noppert again faces a strong opponent, but after Wattimena, Van den Bergh and Clayton, he convincingly beats Joe Cullen 6-1. The other two winners come from England: Nathan Aspinall beats Ricky Evans (6-5) and Stephen Bunting beats Rob Cross (6-4). In the end it will be a Dutch final, because Noppert is too strong for Aspinall 7-2 and Van Gerwen manages to win an exciting semi-final against Bunting 7-5.
For the first time in the history of the EuroTour tournaments, Noppert is in a final. In that final he will play against the winner of the most EuroTour tournaments: Michael van Gerwen. Van Gerwen quickly takes a 3-0 lead, but sees Noppert come back to 3-3. With a score of 6-5 in favor of Van Gerwen, 'Mighty Mike' manages to break his opponent, taking him one leg from the title. With a 60-finish he manages to keep his own leg, as a result of which Van Gerwen wins 8-5 and wins the Austrian Darts Open for the fourth time.
