World Grand Prix 2014

The World Grand Prix 2014 was played from 6 to 12 October in the familiar City West Hotel in Dublin. Defending champion Phil Taylor must acknowledge the superiority of James Wade in the quarterfinals this tournament.

In the first round the tournament loses two seeded players. Dave Chisnall loses to Raymond van Barneveld and Simon Whitlock goes out against Richie Burnett. The real firework follows in the second round as both James Wade and Robert Thornton hit a double in double out nine-darter in their clash. In the previous 16 editions, only Brendan Dolan accomplished this feat and now it was hit twice in one match, which is ultimately won by Wade. In the same round Raymond van Barneveld goes down against Mervyn King. Adrian Lewis loses to Kevin Painter and Peter Wright to Stephen Bunting.

In the quarterfinals there is Taylor's elimination, which means Michael van Gerwen, Stephen Bunting, Gary Anderson and James Wade progress to the semi-finals. Van Gerwen has to go to extremes against King; it takes a last leg decider to beat King. In the semi-finals Van Gerwen beats Bunting comfortably 4-0. Wade and Anderson provide more fireworks. They play a seventh and deciding set, which Wade wins in a fifth and deciding leg.

The final stays level until 3-3. In the seventh set Wade goes up 2-0, he gets three darts to win this set in leg three, but loses the leg and the set. "The Machine” never recovers from this blow. The final set goes to Van Gerwen 3-0 who claims the World Grand Prix for a second time.
