In 1999 the tournament remains in Rochester located in the South East of England. There will again be played over five days, but in a different system than the year before. Sixteen players are divided into four groups. In the group phase they play a double knockout system, which means you can lose a match in that phase. That makes little difference in the end as the four seeded players all win their group and all reach the semi-finals.
In the first semi-final Phil Taylor beats Rod Harrington 5-4 in sets in a very close game. The other semi-final is also decided in the final set, Shayne Burgess beats Peter Manley. The finale again is a prey for Phil Taylor, he wins 6-1 and crowns himself World Grand Prix champion for the second time in a row.
