In 1998 the first edition of the tournament was held. It is the successor of the unofficial World Championship for pairs. Rochester located in the South East of England is chosen as location. It is played over five days in a knockout system and was played in sets that went over the best of three legs. During the first edition 16 players competed for the title. Four of these 16 players were seeded and the dream final would come on the last day. The number one in the world Rod Harrington took on the world champion Phil Taylor.
Of all the seeded players only the number two seed did not survive the first round. Alan Warriner loses in the first round to Shayne Burgess who takes over the seeding of Warriner and reaches the semi-finals along with the other three seeded players. In the semi-finals Phil Taylor beats Shayne Burgess quite easily with 11-2. Rod Harrington beats Peter Manley 11-8 in an exciting duel. The finale goes to Phil Taylor; he wins 13-8 and crowns himself as the first World Grand Prix champion.
