The Premier League in 2010 was one not soon to be forgotten. The Participants in 2010 were Phil Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld, James Wade, Mervyn King, Terry Jenkins, and Ronnie Baxter based on their place in the world rankings. The wildcards in 2010 went to the World Championship finalist, Simon Whitlock and Adrian Lewis.
Taylor ruled the league as ever. Two draws against Mervyn King and James Wade and winning the remaining 12 games convincingly. It was exciting who would finish two, three and four in the league for a long time. Eventually Whitlock was the most consistent and finished second. Terry Jenkins and Raymond van Barneveld fell quickly as possible semi-finalists. Van Barneveld had many personal problems during the Premier League and therefore could not fully concentrate on darts. After 14 weeks King and Wade qualified for the semis. Baxter had been in the top four from week one but lost his spot on the last evening. Lewis had also been in the running but in the second half of the League he didn’t get enough points.
In the semi-final between Wade and Whitlock, Whitlock was the favourite, in a short period leading up to the Premier League finals he had won three Players Championships and was in top form. Very surprisingly it was Wade who won it in a good game where Whitlock missed too many doubles. Taylor took revenge for 2009 in beating Mervyn King 8-1. King won the consolation final to Whitlock. The finale was one to remember for a long time. A great fight in which Taylor put in a nine darter in the second leg of the match. It’s a level game though until the score is 7-7 and Taylor does the unimagined. He again throws a nine-dart leg. For the first time in history two nine darters in one match! When Taylor in the next leg starts with 174 and 180 complete madness breaks out in the venue. But a third nine-dart finish is missed. After treble 20, Taylor misses treble 17. Taylor does win the final with a 10-8 score line and thus wins his title back. It was a final where in years to come people will talk about.
