On 17 and 18 September 2021, the first edition of the Nordic Darts Masters was held in Forum Copenhagen. Eight Scandinavian players competed against eight PDC players. Michael van Gerwen took the title after an exciting final against Fallon Sherrock. For Van Gerwen, it only meant his first title of 2021.
There are not many surprises in the first round. Nathan Aspinall is the only PDC player to lose to a Scandinavian player: 'The Asp' loses 6-4 to Madars Razma. Michael van Gerwen has a difficult opponent in Darius Labanauskas but manages to beat the Lithuanian in a deciding leg (6-5). Fallon Sherrock beats Niels Heinsøe 6-1, while Gerwyn Price is too strong for Daniel Larsson (6-3).
Price has to let the quarterfinals pass without playing, as he is struggling with an arm injury. As a result, Fallon Sherrock gets a bye to the semi-finals. Michael van Gerwen meets the only remaining Scandinavian player Madars Razma and records a convincing 10-4 victory. Jonny Clayton wins surprisingly easy against Peter Wright (10-3) and the Belgian Dimitri van den Bergh reaches the semi-finals after a 10-8 victory over a disappointing Gary Anderson.
In the semi-finals we again see a strong Michael van Gerwen. ‘Mighty Mike’ plays a fine game against Jonny Clayton, who had defeated him several times during their last meetings and beats the Welshman 11-7. The other semi-final between Dimitri van den Bergh and Fallon Sherrock is one that will be talked about for a long time. Van den Bergh takes a big 8-3 lead, but then sinks completely. Sherrock just keep throwing well and Van den Bergh loses in a deciding 21st leg: 11-10. With this great victory, Sherrock will play for the first time in a televised final at the PDC.
In that final, Michael van Gerwen is the big favourite, but it is Fallon Sherrock who starts the best. She even takes a 6-3 lead with an average that is over a hundred. At a crucial moment, Van Gerwen throws an 85 finish to make it 7-7 and from that moment on he oversees the game. He doesn't lose a leg anymore and takes the title during the first edition of the Nordic Darts Masters with an 11-7 victory. This ends a period of drought for the Dutchman because it is only his first title of 2021.
