In 2009, the eighth and final edition of the Las Vegas Desert Classic was played from 1 to July 5. For the fourth year in a row the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino was the host of the tournament. Phil Taylor was again the best in the desert and this time defeated his great rival Raymond van Barneveld in the final 13-11.
The tournament had relatively few surprises. Seven of the eight highest ranked players were in the quarterfinals and in the semi-finals the numbers 1 to 4 in the world. Phil Taylor defeated John Part in the semi-finals with 10-1 and Raymond van Barneveld was too strong for James Wade beating him 11-6.
After 2009 the tournament disappears from the calendar. The lack of public interest and TV station Sky Sports dropping out of as the tournament broadcaster means the end of the torunament, which was very popular among the players.
