The first edition of the BDO World Trophy was held at the Blackpool Tower from 6 till 9 February 2014. The Englishman James Wilson would become the inaugural champion in this first edition. Thus adding the second major title to his list, after the Zuiderduin Masters 2013.
In the run-up to the tournament, there are considerable uncertainties in particular to do with the early announcement of the draw for the tournament. Belgian ace Geert De Vos is not in the field while he is in the world’s top 10. The Belgian doubts for a long time if he wants to switch to the PDC and that costs him his place. BDO World champion Stephen Bunting is on the list and in the draw, but he decides to switch to the PDC after his World Championship title and must be replaced. This solves another potential problem for the organization because they can now put the losing World Championship finalist Alan Norris in.
Wilson plays a very good tournament and beats the Scot Ross Montgomery in a thrilling final. He also beats Paul Jennings, Jeffrey de Graaf, Rick Hofstra and George Richie on his way to the final. Martin Adams misses a nine- darter on double 12 in his match against Jan Dekker.
